ZHUJI, China, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- The Shanghai Sharks eased past the Sichuan Blue Whales 102-90 in the third round of the 2020-21 Chinese Basketball Association league (CBA) here on Thursday.

The first quarter witnessed a seesaw battle until Kyranbek Makan's jump shot with the assist of Luo Hanchen helped Shanghai establish a 22-19 lead.

Shanghai enlarged the gap to 32-21 in the second quarter as Fredette was put on the court, who contributed two consecutive three-pointers. Inspired by his prowess, his teammates kept the double-digit edge until the end of the quarter, with Kyranbek making another two three-pointers at the bottom line, locking the score at 58-45 before the interval.

After the break, Marcus Denmon proved he is no worse than Fredette with two smooth three-pointers as Fredette did. Sichuan once cut the deficit to nine points in the middle of the third quarter by making breakthroughs inside. However, the team soon lost momentum without replacing players, making Shanghai dominate the game again by entering the final quarter 80-66. Though Sichuan struggled to narrow the gap in the last period, their efforts turned out to be fruitless.

Sichuan's Zhu Songwei grabbed a game-high 20 points and two rebounds, while his teammate Su Ruoyu contributed 19 points. Denmon notched 15 points for Shanghai and Kyranbek added 14 points.

"I have weakness in my defense. I shouldered great responsibility since I was temporarily pushed to this position. I hope to make progress in the following games. As a player selected from CUBA, I want to set an example for undergraduates," said Zhu.

"He was still a little nervous, but he played well today. I think he has a lot of potential, " Sichuan head coach Zhou Jinli added. Enditem
