SHANGHAI, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- The signing ceremony for a new Legoland theme park in Shanghai took place on Friday, with investment totaling 550 million U.S. dollars.

Construction of the park is scheduled to start in 2021, with an expected opening date of early 2024. The park will become one of the largest Legoland parks globally, government officials said.

The LEGOLAND Shanghai Resort will be built in the Jinshan district of southwestern Shanghai. The design will combine elements of Lego bricks and Chinese culture, featuring cultural characteristics from Shanghai and the surrounding regions.

Hu Weiguo, Party secretary of the Jinshan district, said the park will help the surrounding areas to speed up industrial upgrading, urban renewal and rural vitalization, further promoting the high-quality development of the Yangtze River Delta, which is one of the country's most economically active regions.

Currently, Legoland parks can be found in many countries, including the United States, Britain, Japan, Germany and Denmark. Enditem
