AMMAN, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- More than 1.2 million Jordanians cast their ballots in the parliamentary elections by 7 p.m. local time (1700 GMT) on Tuesday, according to the country's Independent Election Commission (IEC).

The Commission said it had decided to extend the voting hours until 9 p.m. given the large turnout across the country.

At a press conference in the capital Amman, Minister of State for Media Affairs Ali Al-Ayed said the elections are going smoothly without any major incidents despite the tough health conditions in the country.

According to the Commission, about 4.6 million citizens are eligible to vote, and 1,674 registered candidates, including 260 women, are running for 130 seats of the Lower House. Enditem
