1st LD-Writethru: Chinese shares close higher

BEIJING, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 1.11 percent at 3,346.97 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.7 percent higher at 13,850.83 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices expanded to 801.1 billion yuan (about 121.29 billion U.S. dollars), rising from 727 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Gainers outnumbered losers by 1,148 to 308 on the Shanghai bourse and by 1,398 to 844 in Shenzhen.

Companies in the baijiu (white alcohol), non-ferrous metals and coal mining sectors led the gains, with shares of Shanxi Xinghuacun Fen Wine Factory Co. Ltd. surging by 9.24 percent to close at 273.21 yuan apiece.

The losses were dominated by shares related to electronics manufacturing and semiconductor industry.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.21 percent to close at 2,712.41 points Monday. Enditem
