JERUSALEM, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif Al-Zayani on Wednesday called on Israelis and Palestinians to resume long-stalled peace talks on the basis of a two-state solution during his official visit to Israel.

Al-Zayani made the remarks in joint press statements in Jerusalem alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Talks with officials in Israel have been "useful" and held in a constructive atmosphere, he said, noting he is "optimistic about the future."

Meanwhile, Netanyahu said the recently signed peace deal between Israel and Bahrain "is built on solid foundations of mutual appreciation and shared interest."

Together with U.S. and Bahraini teams, Al-Zayani arrived at Israel's Ben Gurion Airport outside Tel Aviv on Wednesday morning, as the first Bahraini government official to visit Israel.

Al-Zayani has had meetings with Israeli President Reuven Rivlin and Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi, during which the two ministers announced the reciprocal opening of embassies.

A U.S.-brokered agreement between Israel and Bahrain to normalize ties was first announced on Sept. 11 before it was officially signed at the White House on Sept. 15. Enditem
