BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Two sets of China's indigenously-developed autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) "Sea Whale-1000" have completed sea trial for acceptance and long-range test, according to the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

The sea trial included evaluating the AUV's maximum working depth, speed and load capacity. Moreover, the AUVs passed functional verifications of intelligent thermocline tracking observation, autonomous turbulence observation and mesoscale vortex autonomous observation.

In the long-range test, the AUVs moved continuously without failure. They were also tested under extreme conditions during several typhoons.

The "Sea Whale-1000" AUVs have efficient observation capability for medium and small-scale ocean processes, said the CAS, as well as good adaptability to marine environments.

The "Sea Whale-1000" series was jointly developed by the Shenyang Institute of Automation of the CAS, the Ocean University of China, the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology of the CAS, the Second Institute of Oceanography of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Sun Yat-sen University.
