1st LD-Writethru: Chinese shares close higher on Monday

BEIJING, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 1.09 percent to 3,414.49 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.74 percent higher at 13,955.29 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 954 billion yuan (about 145.16 billion U.S. dollars), up from 750.94 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Stocks in the coal and non-ferrous metal industries led the gains, with shares of Datong Coal Industry Co., Ltd. rising by the daily limit of 10 percent to 5.92 yuan apiece.

Going against the upward trend, shares related to the hotel and tourism industry registered losses.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of fast-growing enterprises, gained 0.72 percent to close at 2,686.36 points on Monday. Enditem
