XIAMEN, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Zhang Jian, former president of the Higher People's Court of east China's Anhui Province, stood trial Thursday at the Intermediate People's Court of Xiamen in east China's Fujian Province on charges of taking bribes.

Zhang was accused of abusing the various positions he previously held and misusing his status to seek benefits for others in project contracting, handling of certain cases and personnel transfer from 1995 to 2019.

In return, Zhang accepted money and goods worth more than 71.79 million yuan (about 10.91 million U.S. dollars), according to the indictment.

During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence, which the defendant and his lawyers examined in turn. Both sides gave their own complete account of events.

In his final statement, Zhang pleaded guilty and expressed remorse.

The trial was attended by legislators, political advisors, the press and members of the public.

The sentence will be announced at a later date. Enditem
