HAIKOU, China, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- The 11th Danzhou International Super Chess Grandmaster Tournament kicks off in Danzhou, a city located on southern China's island province of Hainan on Thursday.

Former champion Hungarian Rapport Richard and Gili Anish from the Netherlands led the pack on the opening day.

Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the tournament adopted an online competition mode. Eight players from five countries and regions are competing in the tournament, including Russia, Hungary, the Netherlands, Bulgaria and China.

The event is scheduled to end on December 10, and offers a total of 400,000 yuan (about 61,000 U.S. dollars) as prize money.

The Danzhou training base for the Chinese chess association is a professional venue for Chinese chess training and competition, and was opened in 2016. Enditem
