Roundup: Turkey's total COVID-19 cases near 2.3 mln; Oman reports 1st case of new strain

CAIRO, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- Turkey, the hardest-hit country in the Middle East, reported 13,830 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, pushing up its tally to 2,283,931. Meanwhile, Oman reports the first case of new coronavirus strain.

Turkey also confirmed 194 more fatalities from the infectious virus, bringing the death toll to 22,070. The tally of recoveries in the country rose to 2,164,040.

The Omani health ministry on Wednesday reported the first case of a new coronavirus strain in a foreigner permanently residing in the country who arrived from Britain.

The ministry announced 114 new COVID-19 infections, raising the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 129,888.

Some 50 people recovered during the past 24 hours, taking the overall recoveries to 122,456, while two deaths were reported, pushing up the tally to 1,504.

Iranian health authorities announced 6,283 new COVID-19 infections, raising the total number in the country to 1,261,903, state TV reported.

During her daily briefing, Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman for Iran's Ministry of Health and Medical Education, said 603 of the newly infected in the past 24 hours were hospitalized.

Meanwhile, 82 deaths related to the coronavirus were registered between Tuesday and Wednesday, taking the death toll from the virus in Iran to 55,830.

A total of 1,040,521 COVID-19 patients have recovered or been released from Iranian hospitals, with 4,780 still in critical condition, according to the spokeswoman.

Israel's Ministry of Health reported 23 new COVID-19 death cases, bringing the total fatalities in the country to 3,512.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Israel reached 462,209, after 7,065 new cases were added. The total recoveries rose to 397,896 after 5,617 new recovered cases were added. The active cases rose to 60,801.

Earlier in the day, the Israeli central bank said the upcoming nationwide coronavirus lockdown will cost about 6.5 billion new shekels (2.04 billion U.S. dollars).

The 14-day lockdown will start overnight between Thursday and Friday, with schools and most businesses closed.

The full lockdown will also inflict indirect costs such as business bankruptcies and increasing unemployment, the central bank noted.

The Iraqi Ministry of Health reported 839 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total nationwide infections to 599,965.

The ministry also reported nine new deaths, raising the death toll from the infectious virus to 12,865, and 1,889 more recovered cases, bringing the total recoveries to 549,346.

Morocco announced 1,642 new COVID-19 cases, taking the tally in the North African country since March 2 to 447,081.

The number of recoveries from the coronavirus in Morocco increased to 418,744 after 2,036 more were added, while the death toll rose by 37 to 7,618, the ministry of health said in a statement.

The United Arab Emirates reported 2,067 new cases and four new deaths, taking the total tally of infections and the death toll to 218,766 and 689 respectively. The total recoveries increased to 195,520.

Kuwait reported 411 new COVID-19 cases, raising the tally of infections to 152,438, while the death toll remained at 938.

The Kuwaiti Health Ministry also announced the recovery of 231 more patients, taking the total recoveries to 148,015.

The Qatari health ministry announced 209 new COVID-19 infections, raising the total number of confirmed cases in the Gulf state to 145,061.

The ministry also said 126 more recovered from the virus, bringing the overall recoveries to 142,182.

Lebanon registered a record 4,166 daily COVID-19 infections, raising the total number to 199,925, while the death toll went up by 21 to 1,550, according to the country's health ministry.

Lebanon will impose a new lockdown which will start on Jan. 7 and last until Feb. 1 amid an unprecedented surge in the number of infections.

A vaccination campaign is expected to start by mid-February in Lebanon. Enditem
