BEIJING, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.27 percent at 3,598.65 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.61 percent lower at 15,365.43 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 1.23 trillion yuan (about 191.1 billion U.S. dollars), expanding from 1.09 trillion yuan on the previous trading day. The figure exceeded 1 trillion yuan for the eighth consecutive day of trading.
Stocks related to shipping industries led the gains, with shares of COSCO Shipping Development Co., Ltd. surging by 9.90 percent to close at 3.44 yuan apiece.
Bucking the upward trend, shares of businesses majoring in securities and planting sectors led the losses.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 1.57 percent to close at 3,130.30 points Wednesday. Enditem
