BEIJING, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- A sequel to the 2018 hit drama "Like a Flowing River," which follows three pioneering entrepreneurs after China's economic reform in the late 1970s, has topped the weekly popularity chart for Chinese-language TV series on review platform Douban thrice.

Released on Dec. 20, 2020, "Like a Flowing River 2" continues the story of the entrepreneurs who push the boundaries to reach success during China's economic reform from the late 1980s to early 1990s.

It grabbed the top spot again on the Douban chart, according to the latest results unveiled on Wednesday. It was two days after the 39-episode show screening was completed.

With actor Wang Kai reprising the leading role and actress Yang Caiyu joining the cast, the sequel has been well received in China, currently boasting a Douban rating of 9.1 out of 10.

Many Douban users say they can't wait to see a new sequel, about which there has been no official confirmation from the production firms.

The 2018 TV drama scored a rating of 8.8.

Both dramas were adapted from "Da Jiang Dong Qu," which roughly translates to "River of no return," a critically acclaimed novel by author A Nai. Enditem
