ANKARA, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Turkish prosecutors issued on Tuesday detention warrants for 238 people, including military personnel, for their alleged links to a network believed to be behind a coup attempt in 2016, semi-official Anadolu Agency reported.

The police launched large-scaled operations in 60 cities across Turkey and detained 160 of the suspects allegedly linked to the U.S.-based Muslim preacher Fetullah Gulen, who is accused by Ankara of being behind the failed coup in July 2016 that killed 250.

Among the suspects were 218 serving military personnel, including six colonels, three lieutenant colonels and nine majors. They are accused of keeping in regular touch with the members of the Gulen movement via payphone, Anadolu said.

Prosecutors in Izmir Province also issued warrants for suspects in northern Cyprus where the Turkish military is deployed, it added. Enditem
