HONG KONG, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- Secretary for Education of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government Kevin Yeung Yun-hung said on Friday that the national security education in Hong Kong aims to help students develop a sense of national identity.

Yeung told media that national security was part and parcel of the whole national education and the two things were very much related.

The HKSAR government's Education Bureau on Thursday issued circulars to schools in Hong Kong to provide guidelines on school administration and education in relation to safeguarding national security.

Based on the implementation mode of Constitution and HKSAR Basic Law education, the bureau has newly compiled the Curriculum Framework of National Security Education in Hong Kong to illustrate related topics, teaching foci and learning elements on national security in the existing primary and secondary school curricula.

"We are talking about helping students to develop a sense of national identity, being national citizens, and they have to develop a sense of taking up the responsibility to protect our country," Yeung said.

At the earliest stage, such as primary schools, students could start to learn that Hong Kong is part of China, they are Hong Kong residents and at the same time Chinese citizens, he said.

They could gradually build on these fundamental concepts and start to learn more about the concept of national security, he added. Enditem
