Macao's merchandise export up 29 pct in January

MACAO, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Macao's total merchandise export amounted to 1.42 billion patacas in January 2021, up 29 percent year-on-year, the special administrative region's (SAR) statistic department said here on Thursday.

The latest report from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the value of re-exports expanded 32.4 percent to 1.26 billion patacas in January, with that of diamond and diamond jewelery and electronic components soaring by 206.6 percent and 202.5 percent respectively.

Meanwhile, the value of domestic exports went up 8.7 percent to 169 million patacas in the month, the DSEC report added.

External merchandise trade totaled 12.12 billion patacas in January, up 28.5 percent from a year earlier. Merchandise trade deficit last month totaled 9.27 billion patacas.

Analyzed by destination, merchandise export to the mainland rose 59.1 percent year-on-year to 151 million patacas.

On the other hand, exports to the Hong Kong SAR and the United States grew 57.1 percent and 3.9 percent respectively to 1.09 billion patacas and 52 million patacas, whereas exports to the European Union (EU) slid 2.3 percent to 17 million patacas.

Exports of textiles and garments fell 10.5 percent year-on-year to 114 million patacas, while exports of non-textiles went up 34.2 percent to 1.31 billion patacas, showed the report. (1 pataca equals 0.1252 U.S. dollar) Enditem
