DALIAN, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- An 18-meter-long sperm whale was recently found stranded and dead in the shallow waters of Bohai Sea in Dalian, northeast China's Liaoning Province, local authorities said.

The male whale, weighing 40 tonnes, was in between adulthood and old age, according to experts' preliminary judgment.

Sperm whales are very rare in Bohai Sea. The corpse of the whale has been transported to a professional biotechnology institution for emergency treatment and will be made into a plasticized specimen, said the city's public cultural service center.

According to Sui Hongjin, an anatomy expert, no visible wounds have been found on the whale's body, making it difficult to determine the cause of death at this point.

The plasticized specimen of the sperm whale will be displayed in the Dalian Natural History Museum and related marine science research will be conducted, said the authorities. Enditem
