BEIJING, March 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 1.21 percent, at 3,508.59 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.71 percent lower at 14,751.12 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 917.52 billion yuan (about 141.98 billion U.S. dollars), expanding from 873.2 billion yuan on the previous trading day.
Stocks related to rare-earth magnets, paper-making industries and new chemical materials led the gains, while those in securities and banking sectors logged weaker performance.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.93 percent to close at 2,966.89 points Tuesday. Enditem
