HONG KONG, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Tung Chee-hwa, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and chairman of Our Hong Kong Foundation, said on Friday that Hong Kong people must have the national concept, and Hong Kong young people can better realize their dreams under an improved electoral system.

Tung made the remarks at a forum in Hong Kong after a decision on improving the electoral system of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) was adopted on Thursday by an overwhelming majority vote at the fourth session of the 13th National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, in Beijing.

An improved electoral system will help safeguard Hong Kong's business environment and prevent Hong Kong from becoming an area of power games, which is conducive to Hong Kong's status as a global financial and commercial hub, Tung said.

Hong Kong can also enjoy more benefits from the mainland economy and regain its glory, he said, citing the new five-year socio-economic plan, the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and the Belt and Road Initiative.

Tung said Hong Kong's elections will continue to be open, transparent and fair, with even greater inclusiveness and representation, as an improved electoral system will broaden the scope for residents to participate in the administration of Hong Kong.

The NPC decision does not target any political group but aims to prevent anti-China disruptors from entering the administration structure of Hong Kong, he said.

Tung in particular urged Hong Kong young people to open up their minds, learn more about their nation and embrace the opportunities of the time. Enditem
