SANAA, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Yemen's Houthi rebels said they launched an explosive-laden drone attack toward Jazan airport in southwestern Saudi Arabia on Thursday night.
"The attack targeted hangars of military warplanes in the airport," the Houthi military spokesman Yehya Sarea said on Twitter.
Meanwhile, Saudi-owned Alarabiya TV reported that the Saudi-led coalition forces intercepted and destroyed an explosive-laden drone launched by the Yemeni Houthi militia toward Jazan.
This is the second attempted attack by the Houthis against Saudi Arabia in fewer than 24 hours after the coalition forces said in a statement earlier in the day that they intercepted and destroyed another bomb-laden drone fired by the Houthis toward the Saudi southwestern city of Khamis Mushait.
The Houthis have recently stepped up cross-border missile and drone attacks against Saudi border cities and oil facilities. Most of the attacks were reportedly foiled by the coalition.
Yemen has been mired in a civil war since late 2014 when the Iran-backed Houthi militia seized control of several northern Yemeni provinces and forced the internationally-recognized government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi out of the capital Sanaa.
The Saudi-led Arab coalition intervened in the Yemeni conflict in March 2015 to support Hadi's government. Enditem
