BAGHDAD, April 10 (Xinhua) -- Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit arrived on Saturday in Baghdad to meet with Iraqi leaders over the pan-Arab organization's relations with Iraq and regional developments.

The two sides discussed "Iraq's foreign policy and the results of many visits by Iraqi delegations to neighboring countries, especially the recent ones by Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi to some Gulf countries," Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein said during a press conference after the meeting.

They also discussed Iraq's relations with its two neighbors Iran and Turkey, as well as the unrest in Syria, Hussein added, noting "the unstable situation in Syria negatively affects Iraq."

Meanwhile, Aboul-Gheit said the Arab League will respond positively to any request from Iraq, a founding member of the organization.

A statement by the Iraqi Presidency said President Barham Salih received Aboul-Gheit in his office and discussed with him the Iraqi and regional political and security developments.

They also discussed the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic which requires cooperation, and the means to enhance security, stability, development, and economic cooperation, according to the statement.

"Iraq focuses on dialogue to solve problems and ease tension in the region, and adopts Arab cooperation in consolidating security and peace in the region," the statement quoted Salih as saying.

Aboul-Gheit highlighted the Arab League's support for the Iraqi efforts in combating terrorism and enhancing the country's security and stability, as well as protecting its sovereignty.

A separate statement by the media office of Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi said al-Kadhimi met with Aboul-Gheit over the latest regional and international developments.

"Iraq supports initiatives to end the conflict in Yemen, supports Lebanon in overcoming its difficulties, and supports the return of Syria to the Arab League, and encourages the internal dialogue in the country," al-Kadhimi said during the meeting.

"The Arab League has an important role to play in promoting constructive rapprochement, overcoming differences, and consolidating efforts to calm the tension between regional countries," he added. Enditem
