BEIRUT, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Lebanon's security forces on Tuesday thwarted an attempt to smuggle 40 Syrian refugees by sea to Cyprus.
A security source told Xinhua that the 40 Syrians were arrested near the beach in Anfeh in the district of Koura in northern Lebanon, before they arrived at a boat waiting to transport them to Cyprus.
The arrested people had been transferred to a security center for investigation, where they admitted that their destination was Cyprus.
Last month, the Lebanese army stopped a boat with 72 people on board in in the northern district of Akkar, trying to sail to Cyprus.
People smuggling networks are active in northern Lebanon in exchange for sums ranging between 2,000 U.S. dollars and 3,000 dollars per person. Enditem
