AMMAN, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Jordan and Palestine said on Saturday that Israel's decision to resettle Palestinians at Jerusalem's Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood is considered "a war crime and a flagrant breach of international humanitarian law."
The remarks were made by Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and his Palestinian counterpart Riyad al-Maliki during a phone conversation, where they noted the international community should take immediate and effective steps to stop Israel's illegal and inhuman practices against the Palestinians in Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque.
During the talks, the two ministers held Israel accountable for the dangerous escalation in Jerusalem, according to a statement of the foreign ministry.
They reiterated Jerusalem, with its shrines, as "a red line," noting Israeli violations have provoked the feelings of 2 billion Muslims and would push the region toward further escalation.
Jordan will continue to protect the Arab-Islamic identity of Jerusalem's holy sites, legal and historical status quo, and confront Israeli violations, Safadi said. Enditem
