1st LD-Writethru: Chinese shares close higher on Wednesday

BEIJING, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.61 percent, at 3,462.75 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.7 percent higher at 14,064.87 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 765.5 billion yuan (about 119.1 billion U.S. dollars), down from 843.2 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Shares related to media and entertainment, and medical equipment sectors led the gains, while those related to electricity and environment protection sectors led the losses.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 1.34 percent to close at 2,960.35 points Wednesday. Enditem
