HONG KONG, May 27 (Xinhua) -- The value of Hong Kong's total goods exports increased to 384.9 billion HK dollars (49.59 billion U.S. dollars) in April, up 24.4 percent from the same month last year, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government said on Thursday.

The value of imports of goods increased by 25.2 percent year-on-year to 416.7 billion HK dollars in April. A trade deficit of 31.8 billion HK dollars, or 7.6 percent of the value of imports, was recorded for the month, according to the Census and Statistics Department of the HKSAR government.

The value of total merchandise trade for the first four months of this year was way higher than the previous high recorded in the same period in 2018, reflecting vibrant trading activities amid a sharp rebound in external demand, a spokesman for the HKSAR government said.

Looking ahead, the sustained revival of the global economy should continue to render support to Hong Kong's export performance in the near term, the spokesman said.

However, the evolving pandemic situation and other risk factors such as China-U.S. relations and geopolitical tensions still warrant attention, the spokesman added. (1 U.S. dollar equals 7.76 HK dollars) Enditem
