SHANGHAI, June 26 (Xinhua) -- A new oceanographic research and training vessel named after Sun Yat-sen University was delivered for service in Shanghai on Saturday.

The vessel with a displacement of 6,880 tonnes has a cruising range of 15,000 nautical miles. Dubbed a "maritime laboratory," it is designed with multiple scientific research functions like exploration, sampling and experiments.

Apart from a 760-square-meter stationary laboratory, the vessel can carry more than 10 mobile container laboratories, said Zhao Chuangye, a manager of the project who works at the Jiangnan Shipyard Group (JSG).

The ship was manufactured by the JSG under the China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited and delivered to Sun Yat-sen University as a platform for marine scientific research and talent training.

The vessel will serve China's strategies of maritime development and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area development and provide scientific and technological support for national and regional marine economic development, said Luo Jun, president of the university. Enditem
