Sierra Leone to abolish death penalty

FREETOWN, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Sierra Leone's parliament on Friday voted to abolish the death penalty in the West African country.

Abass Chernor Bundu, speaker of the parliament, announced the abolition and removal of the death penalty from the law books of Sierra Leone following a vote of unanimity.

The removal and abolition of the death penalty was also a manifesto promise made by Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio, who is expected to sign the act for enforcement.

Sierra Leone carried out its last execution of the death penalty in 1998. Enditem
