BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) -- "White Snake 2," a sequel to Light Chaser Animation's hit film on the legend of the White Snake, landed in Chinese theaters on Friday, nabbing an opening day revenue of nearly 60 million yuan (9.28 million U.S. dollars).

Titled "White Snake 2: The Tribulation of Green Snake," the animated fantasy saw its cumulative ticket sales surge past 84 million yuan by early Saturday afternoon, according to data from box office tracker Maoyan.

It is set to lock horns with "Rainbow Sea Fly High," which, scheduled to be released on July 30, is a sci-fi movie from the makers of "Ne Zha," China's top-grossing animated film to date.

Currently boasting a rating of 7.5 out of 10 based on more than 27,000 reviews on review platform Douban, "White Snake 2" is expected to complete its China box office run with more than 500 million yuan, according to the estimation made by Maoyan.

"White Snake" and "Ne Zha," hit theaters in January and July 2019, raking in around 455 million yuan and 5 billion yuan, respectively. Enditem
