FUZHOU, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- East China's Fujian Province recorded 263 locally transmitted confirmed COVID-19 cases and nine local asymptomatic carriers between Sept. 10 and 6 p.m. Friday, according to local authorities.

The confirmed cases were reported in the cities of Putian, Quanzhou and Xiamen, while the asymptomatic carriers were all detected in Putian, officials said at a provincial epidemic-control press conference on Friday.

Since the latest resurgence began on Sept. 10, local authorities have conducted extensive nucleic acid testing. The viral genome sequencing of 56 relevant cases in the outbreak has been completed and the strains were identified as the highly infectious Delta variant.

As of Thursday, Xiamen had completed its first round of citywide nucleic acid testing, with a total of 29 pooled samples with 10 individuals each testing positive, the city's epidemic control headquarters said on Friday.

The city had identified 2,230 close contacts of the confirmed patients and 2,754 secondary close contacts as of Thursday, said Wang Tingliang, deputy secretary-general of the Xiamen municipal government.

Xiamen had registered 84 confirmed COVID-19 cases as of Thursday. Enditem
