XI'AN, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Olympic champion Liu Shiying clinched the gold medal in the women's javelin throw at China's 14th National Games here on Wednesday.

Liu secured the win for Shandong Province with her second attempt of 64.33 meters to beat Hubei's Lyu Huihui, who threw 67.98 meters for an Asian record at the national trial in 2019.

"I have been in a poor form after the Tokyo Olympics. I did my best today, I was exhausted and almost fell in my fifth throw. I feel good to win the title with this result," said Liu.

The 28-year-old made a powerful throw of 66.34 meters to award China its first women's javelin throw gold medal at Tokyo 2020.

With her first National Games crown, Liu's next goal is to win the Athletics World Championships.

"I had a silver at the 2019 Doha World Athletics, and I want to fight for the gold, that's the next challenge in my career," Liu said.

Lyu won the silver with 62.43 meters while the bronze went to Hebei's Ge Lijuan with 58.54.

"Liu made the history in Tokyo, that's a motivation to me. I am a veteran, but I still want to break through," said the 32-year-old Lyu, who ranked fifth at Tokyo 2020. Enditem
