BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.

LUNAR SAMPLES

Researchers have studied the lunar samples brought back by the Chang'e-5 mission and found that they are likely around 1.96 billion years old, shedding new light on the evolution of the moon.

The first research article on the Chang'e-5 samples, titled "Age and composition of young basalts on the Moon, measured from samples returned by Chang'e-5," was published online in the journal Science Friday.

BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION

Biodiversity conservation has been elevated to a national strategy in China as part of the country's efforts to improve biodiversity governance. A white paper released by the State Council Information Office Friday said the country has organized nationwide biodiversity surveys, and put in place sound biodiversity monitoring and observation networks.

China has also increased financial input and effort in technology research and development to improve the capacity for biodiversity conservation and governance, the white paper said.

ROAD TESTS OF SELF-DRIVING CARS

A total of 278 roads stretching more than 1,027 km in Beijing have been opened for self-driving vehicle tests as of September end, according to Beijing Innovation Center for Mobility Intelligent.

So far, Beijing has issued temporary car plates for road test to 165 self-driving vehicles from 16 companies including domestic internet giant Baidu and Chinese autonomous vehicle startup Pony.ai.
