JERUSALEM, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Clashes broke out between Israeli police and Palestinians outside East Jerusalem's Old City on Tuesday night.

Israeli police said in a statement that Palestinians "rioted" and hurled stones at buses near the Old City's Damascus Gate, adding some 22 Palestinian suspects were arrested.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said in a statement that it treated 17 people who were wounded by beatings, sound bombs, rubber bullets and tear gas used by the Israeli police.

Ten of the injured needed hospital care, it added.

The clashes come amid a celebration by Muslims of the Prophet Muhammad's birthday.

Tension has been on the rise over the past days with nightly clashes between Palestinians and Israeli police in East Jerusalem.

The Palestinians say the clashes were sparked by police restrictions on gathering near the Damascus Gate, a popular gathering spot during holidays.

In April and May, a series of nightly clashes near the Damascus Gate during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan sparked tension that led to an 11-day war between Israel and Gaza's Hamas. Enditem
