TEHRAN, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- A "terrorist" group was destroyed in the border town of Sardasht in the northwest of the country, Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) announced in a statement on Thursday.

"The armed terrorist team that intended to carry out sabotage operations in the northwestern region was destroyed upon entering the country thanks to the reconnaissance and intelligence operations," the statement said.

In this operation, weapons and ammunition were also seized from the militants, it added.

The report did not provide details on the date of the operation and possible casualties.

Sardasht is located in Iran's West Azarbaijan Province which has a 100 km border with Iraq.

Northwestern and western regions of Iran have been the scene of deadly clashes between the Iranian security forces and Kurdish militants over the past decades. Enditem
