BEIJING, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.

WIND, PHOTOVOLTAIC POWER PROJECTS

China has begun a series of large wind power and photovoltaic projects in its desert areas since mid-October, the country's top economic planner said Saturday.

According to the National Development and Reform Commission, promoting wind and photovoltaic power will help restore the ecosystems in desert areas, boost local economy, and contribute to the country's carbon-cutting endeavors.

NEW SPECIES DISCOVERY

A new species in the leaf-beetle genus has been found in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, with the study published in the international journal of Entomotaxonomia, a local research institute said.

The snout-vent length of Sphenoraia Clark ranges from 6.0 mm to 6.5 mm. They are very appealing with unique features, such as a humped back and a yellow body with black spots. It was very rare to find the species in the central area of a major populous city.

NUCLEIC ACID TESTING

China now has 11,581 medical institutions capable of nucleic acid testing, 5.6 times that in last March, according to a Saturday press conference.

With the current capacity, more than 29 million individual samples can be tested per day, a number that can be increased further through pooled sampling, said an official with the National Health Commission. Enditem
