BEIJING, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 1.18 percent, at 3,637.57 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.82 percent higher at 14,964.46 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 1.1 trillion yuan (about 172.98 billion U.S. dollars), down from 1.2 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.
Shares related to alcohol, beverages and refined tea, as well as culture and arts posted strong performance, while shares of forestry and animal husbandry sectors led the losses.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 1.66 percent to close at 3,424.7 points Wednesday. Enditem
