WUHAN, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Wuhan University in central China received a donation of 78 million yuan (about 12.3 million U.S. dollars) from an anonymous alumnus on Tuesday, according to sources from the university.

The donor is a genetics graduate from Wuhan University's College of Life Sciences. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the college.

The alumnus expressed gratitude to Wuhan University and named the education fund established with the donation after the late professor Yu Xianjue, who had a profound influence on the donor, college Dean Song Baoliang said. The alumnus donated earnings gained from the scientific and technological achievements.

Yu was a Ph.D. graduate of the California Institute of Technology. He returned to China in October 1949, when the People's Republic of China was founded, to devote himself to the country's education cause.

The new education fund will be used to support the development of Wuhan University's College of Life Sciences and provide tuition fees for Wuhan University undergraduates in need, per the donor's wishes. Enditem
