HONG KONG, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- Fifty seven ex-officio members of the Election Committee in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) were determined to be validly registered by the Candidate Eligibility Review Committee (CERC) on Wednesday.

A notice was published in the Gazette by the CERC to declare the validity of the registrations.

The Registration and Electoral Office received 51 registration forms from newly-elected Legislative Council (LegCo) members after the seventh-term LegCo election was conducted on Dec. 19, 2021 and all of them were determined valid by the CERC.

The CERC has also determined the registrations from two HKSAR members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and four arising from changes of holders of specified offices as valid for the Election Committee.

All of the 90 LegCo members may register as ex-officio members in the Members of the LegCo subsector of the Election Committee. According to the law, members of the sixth-term LegCo who are re-elected would not need to register again if they are already registered Election Committee ex-officio members.

After the improvement to HKSAR's electoral system, the Election Committee, expanded to 1,500 members of five sectors, shall be responsible for electing the Chief Executive designate and part of the members of the LegCo, as well as for nominating candidates for the Chief Executive and LegCo members.
