New method found for probing differences between matter, antimatter

BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- The Beijing Spectrometer (BESIII) International Collaboration has explored a new method to probe the differences between matter and antimatter with extreme sensitivity, according to the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

The latest BESIII results show that the produced baryons and antibaryons have a preferred direction. Moreover, the spin direction of the baryon and antibaryon are correlated, due to quantum entanglement, said the CAS. The results have been published in the journal Nature.

The BESIII International Collaboration has exploited strange baryons to shed light on conjugation and parity (CP) violations. Researchers observe the decay of the strange quark to determine the spin orientation of the baryon. At BESIII, systems of double-strange baryon-antibaryon are created in electrons annihilations with positrons.

The new method provides a new perspective to probe the asymmetry of matter and antimatter, according to Wang Yifang, director of the Institute of High-Energy Physics under the CAS.

The BESIII is a China-developed large experimental facility for particle detector experiments. Founded in 2008, the BESIII International Collaboration has about 500 members from around 80 institutions worldwide. Enditem
