TEHRAN, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian on Wednesday expressed concerns about a possible military operation by Türkiye in northern Syria.

"I would like to emphasize, in the continuation of last night's talks and the (trilateral) summit (of Iran, Russia and Türkiye), that we are concerned about the possibility of Turkish military entry into Syrian territory," Amir-Abdollahian told a joint press conference with his visiting Syrian counterpart Faisal Mekdad.

"We also emphasize the solution of some remaining issues in the field of terrorist conflicts in Syria to address some of Türkiye's concerns," he said, highlighting "territorial integrity and respect for the national sovereignty of Syria."

Calling the U.S. military presence in the east of the Euphrates a "problem," the top Iranian diplomat urged the "unconditional withdrawal" of the U.S. forces from Syria "because the Syrian army has the necessary capabilities to maintain the security and territorial integrity of its country."

For his part, Mekdad repeated the Syrian government's opposition to the "interference of Türkiye" in Syria's affairs.

"It is not in the interest of Türkiye or other countries to enter the borders of Syria, as this will cause a conflict between the governments of Syria and Türkiye and affect two friendly and brotherly nations," he said.

Mekdad arrived in Tehran on Wednesday, a day after the trilateral summit held in the Iranian capital of the Astana Process, which was initiated in 2017 for peace in Syria, opposed any military solution to conflicts in Syria and highlighted the territorial integrity of the Arab state. Enditem
