BEIJING, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.

SHENZHOU-14 ASTRONAUTS' EVAS

China's astronauts Chen Dong and Liu Yang have completed their extravehicular activities (EVAs) and returned to the space station lab module Wentian, the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) said on early hours of Friday.

This was the first time Chinese astronauts have used Wentian's airlock cabin, aided by its small mechanical arm, to carry out EVAs, said the CMSA, who has declared Friday's mission a complete success.

R&D SPENDING

China's research and development (R&D) spending intensity, or the expenditure on R&D as a percentage of its gross domestic product, built up to 2.44 percent in 2021, shows a yearly statistical bulletin.

The rate, jumping from 1.91 percent in 2012, ranks the top among developing countries and is higher than the European Union's average level, said Liu Huifeng, a researcher from the Chinese Academy of Science and Technology for Development.

DRIVERLESS SANITATION VEHICLES

Chinese self-driving startup WeRide launched the commercial operation of driverless sanitation vehicles on open roads in the southern metropolis of Guangzhou on Thursday.

The vehicles will provide daily road-cleaning services from midnight to 7:00 p.m. in Guangzhou International Bio Island, which covers an area of 1.9 square km in the city's Huangpu District, according to the company. Enditem
