SHIJIAZHUANG, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Liu Xinyun, former vice governor of north China's Shanxi Province, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for taking bribes and abuse of power, a Chinese court announced Wednesday.

Liu, who also served as former head of the Shanxi provincial public security department, was fined 1 million yuan (143,810 U.S. dollars) as part of the penalty, the Intermediate People's Court of Langfang City in north China's Hebei Province said in a statement.

His illicit gains from bribery and accrued interest will be recovered and turned over to the state treasury.

Liu was found guilty of taking advantage of his former positions in Shandong and Shanxi provinces between 1998 and 2021 to assist others in business operations, case handling, and other matters. In return, he illegally accepted money and valuables worth more than 13.33 million yuan in total.

Liu was also convicted of abuse of power, which caused heavy losses concerning public property and damaged the interests of the state and the people.

The court granted Liu a lenient sentence in accordance with the law as he confessed to his crimes, provided further information about his crimes that were unknown to investigators, showed repentance, and all his illegal gains had been recovered, according to the statement. Enditem
