ANKARA, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- One police officer was killed and another injured late on Monday when a bomb exploded near a hotel in Türkiye's southern province of Mersin, Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said Tuesday.

Soylu told reporters that the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) was responsible for the attack, adding two women carried out attacks and died in the suicide bombing.

The two women, affiliated with the PKK group, opened fire on the police who were guarding a hotel for security officers in the Mezitli district of Mersin, Soylu said.

"The female terrorists were injured during the clashes. They understood they would not be able to escape, and detonated themselves," he added.

In a separate statement, the Turkish Interior Ministry said one of the two PKK members who carried out the attack was identified as Dilsah Ercan.

The PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the EU, has been rebelling against the Turkish government for more than three decades. Enditem
