BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.

JAWED VERTEBRATE FOSSILS

A trove of fossils in China unearthed in rocks dating back some 440 million years showed new fish species and provided concrete evidence of the origin and earliest evolution of the jawed vertebrates.

The four papers published Wednesday in the journal Nature described an array of findings based on the fossils found at two fossil beds in the early Silurian strata -- "Chongqing Fossil Bed" and "Guizhou Shiqian Fossil Bed."

POWER STORAGE UTILITY

A power storage utility has been built in the northeastern Chinese city of Dalian, Liaoning Province, with the capacity to meet one day's electricity demand of some 200,000 people.

The first phase of the Dalian Flow Battery Energy Storage Peak-shaving Power Station has been connected to the power grid and is expected to be put into operation in October, according to the Chinese Academy of Sciences on Thursday.

CHINA'S INNOVATION RANKING

The Chinese mainland has climbed to 11th place on the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2022 released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), up one place from its 2021 ranking.

This elevation in rank marks the Chinese mainland's 10th consecutive ascent, bringing it to the top of the 36 upper middle-income economies, according to the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) on Thursday. Enditem
