BEIJING, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.

SHRIMP FOSSIL

Chinese palaeontologists have established a new species of a shrimp fossil unearthed in southwest China's Yunnan Province, dating back 518 million years.

The new species, Innovatiocaris maotianshanensis, was formerly known as an Anomalocaris, meaning abnormal shrimp, as its appearance is quite similar to the already known radiodont, according to the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

TANG DYNASTY RUINS

Chinese archaeologists recently discovered a large number of Tang Dynasty (618-907) artifacts and ruins at the site of an old city in south China's island province of Hainan.

Two building base sites, 76 pillar holes, 24 ash pits and a trench were unearthed at the Zhuyaling city site, alongside ceramic wares such as pots, bowls and plates, as well as building components. Most of these finds date back to the Tang Dynasty.

These findings will provide archaeological data to help understand the island's administrative set-up, social life, handicraft production, and economic and cultural exchanges during the Han Dynasty (202 BC-220 AD) and Tang Dynasty.

HYDROGEN-POWERED BUSES

Nearly a year after the city of Zhangjiakou in north China's Hebei Province co-hosted the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games, 444 hydrogen-powered buses have become the preferred mode of public transport for locals. These buses were first used for the Olympics.

The hydrogen-fueled vehicles can start quickly in the low winter temperatures of minus-30-degrees Celsius in the high-latitude city, some 160 km to the north of Beijing.

Hydrogen can be produced from various sources of primary energy, including coal, natural gas and renewable energy, through power generation. The hydrogen produced from renewable energy such as wind and photovoltaic power is called green hydrogen -- making it one of the most eco-friendly technologies. Enditem
