BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.

PHOTO EXHIBITION IN SPACE STATION

A special exhibition of space-related photographs is being held on China's Tiangong space station, orbiting about 400 km above Earth, as a New Year gift for the Spring Festival.

The Shenzhou-15 astronauts Fei Junlong, Deng Qingming and Zhang Lu showcased 21 photographs of the orbiting Chinese space station captured from Earth, featuring various splendid moments and unique angles.

R&D SPENDING

China's total expenditure on research and development (R&D) amounted to nearly 3.09 trillion yuan (about 456 billion U.S. dollars) in 2022, up 10.4 percent year on year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

After deducting price factors, China's R&D spending in 2022 rose 8 percent year on year, said the NBS.

China's total spending on R&D accounted for 2.55 percent of its gross domestic product last year, up 0.12 percentage points from the previous year.

AI MODEL FOR OCEAN CURRENT

Chinese researchers have built an artificial intelligence (AI) inference and prediction system for the Indonesian Throughflow, which can make valid ocean current predictions seven months in advance.

The researchers used sea surface heights between the Indian and Pacific Ocean basins to design their AI model and trained the model with oceanic data sets.

They said that the system may provide a new tool for studying ocean circulation and climate change in the Indo-Pacific Ocean and ease the pressure of real-time oceanographic observation. Enditem
