QINGDAO, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Beijing swept the top five positions of the women's short program despite the absence of reigning national champion An Xiangyi at China's national figure skating championships here on Wednesday.

A trio of 13-year-olds: Li Ruotang, Tong Ruichen and Wang Yihan, spearheaded Beijing's contention for the women's title with results of 58.54, 57.88 and 57.14 points respectively. Zhang Ruiyang and Gao Shiqi rounded out the leading pack of five.

The only other Beijing representative, Xu Wandi, finished ninth on 50.41, as the capital city's winter sports administrative center has sent six skaters to the 12-participant women's event.

Former national champion Chen Hongyi, 20, scrambled on a down-graded triple-Lutz and temporarily sat at bottom.

16-year-old An, who ranked sixth in the World Junior Figure Skating Championships in Calgary, Canada a month ago, opted to skip the national competition, citing a tight schedule.

Guangdong's Dai Dawei was the men's overnight leader after claiming 61.84 points through his short program routine, edging Jilin's Tian Tonghe (60.95) and Heilongjiang's Xu Juwen (60.70) to second and third places.

Zhang Siyang and Yang Yongchao of Heilongjiang were the front-runners after the pairs short program, beating Zhang Jiaxuan and Huang Yihang by nearly 10 points. Yang Yixi/Deng Shunyang, the other pair representing China at last month's World Junior Championships, finished a disappointing fourth on 46.35.

Newly-crowned national champions Chen Xizi and Xing Jianing, representing the Harbin Winter Sports Training Center, finished on top in Wednesday's rhythm dance on 68.44 points. National youth champions Lin Yufei and Gao Zijian settled for distant runners-up with a deficit of nearly nine points.

A total of 59 skaters participated in the season-ending event after current national champion Chen Yudong, 18, suffered a persistent low-grade fever due to acute mumps and announced Monday to withdraw from the men's skate.

The two-day competition will continue on Thursday with free skates of the men's, women's and pairs events as well as the ice dancing free dance. Enditem
