BEIJING, May 11 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.

"ROOF OF WORLD"

"There is always someone asking me where Waliguan is, and my answer is: in the clouds!" said 59-year-old atmospheric observer Huang Jianqing, when telling the story of the China Global Atmosphere Watch Baseline Observatory on the top of Waliguan mountain, a unique observatory located in the hinterland of Eurasia.

The atmospheric observers' daily work at the observatory seems simple and dull, but is extremely important. They are tasked with checking instruments, recording data, changing sampling films and collecting atmospheric samples.

Daily observations are an important basis for judging the changes in atmospheric composition, said Yang Hao, a young observer who started to work at the observatory in 2021.

LUNAR CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS, TECHNOLOGY

The Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) recently received 500 mg of the lunar samples brought back by the Chang'e-5 mission. The research team with BIT will study the material characteristics of these samples and also related additive manufacturing technology, with the building of a future lunar research station in mind.

Shen Jun, a professor with the school of mechanical engineering at BIT, noted that both international and domestic plans have been laid out for the construction of lunar research stations, and her team will focus on related preliminary research.

"Building a lunar research station is like building a house on the moon. Due to current rocket carrying capacity limitations and the high cost of transportation between the Earth and the Moon, it is essential to make use of indigenous materials on the moon in lunar research station construction. That means lunar soil will serve as the main material," said Shen.

TIANZHOU-6

China plans to launch the cargo spacecraft Tianzhou-6 from the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site in the southern island province of Hainan around 9:22 p.m. (Beijing Time) on Wednesday, according to the China Manned Space Agency.

The Long March-7 Y7 carrier rocket carrying Tianzhou-6 has been filled with propellant and is ready for its planned launch, said the agency. Enditem
