BEIJING, June 18 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.

DESERT SOILIZATION

Using an innovative technique called "desert soilization", researchers from Chongqing Jiaotong University have turned barren desert sands into productive, farmable land at an affordable cost.

They have patented a process to mix a paste made of plant cellulose with sand and apply it to the desert surface, giving it the same properties as soil -- with the same capacity to sustain water, air and fertilizer.

GREEN DEVELOPMENT

The Taklimakan Desert, the world's second-largest shifting sand desert, has become a driving force for green development in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

In recent years, photovoltaic stations have been constructed, and large plantations of vegetation such as roses and cistanche have emerged on the outskirts of this vast desert, equivalent in size to Malaysia. This transformation has not only attracted tourism but also positioned the desert as a flourishing center of sustainable development.

DIGITAL CIVILIZATION

The Nishan Dialogue on Digital Civilization will be held from June 25 to 27 in Nishan in Qufu, east China's Shandong Province, the birthplace of ancient Chinese sage Confucius (551 B.C.-479 B.C.).

Themed "The Age of AI: Building a Digital World of Exchanges, Mutual Learning and Inclusiveness," the dialogue plans to invite several hundred high-level representatives from governmental departments, business sectors, and academic and research institutions worldwide to attend the event in person or via video link. Participants are expected to discuss ways to lead the development of a digital world with the help of AI technologies, and to pool wisdom for the future of digital civilization. Enditem
