BEIJING, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China:

YOUNG SCI-TECH TALENTS

China has unveiled a slew of measures to strengthen the cultivation and management of young sci-tech talents, in a bid to facilitate the country's drive to achieve greater self-reliance and strength in science and technology.

The document, released by the general offices of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council, urged efforts to support and guide young talents to serve high-quality development, encouraging them to carry out original innovation, achieve breakthroughs, and translate research outcomes into practical applications.

SHELF CORING

Chinese scientists said they have, for the first time, reached 302.07 meters below the seafloor during a scientific drilling and coring mission on the northern shelf of the South China Sea.

Researchers announced the breakthrough after completing the latest expedition aboard Haiyang Dizhi-10, or literally Ocean Geology 10, a domestically built marine geological survey vessel.

TECH-EMPOWERED DESERT CONTROL

The 9th Kubuqi International Desert Forum opened in the city of Ordos in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, with an aim to deepen international cooperation on desertification prevention and control driven by science and technology.

Themed "Technology-empowered desert control for the benefit of mankind," this edition of the forum has attracted approximately 300 participants from home and abroad, including foreign dignitaries, representatives from United Nations (UN) organizations, diplomats from countries severely affected by desertification, government officials, experts, scholars and entrepreneurs.
