BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China:

LUNAR RESEARCH STATION

Space agencies of China and South Africa have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on cooperation of the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) program, according to the China National Space Administration (CNSA).

The MOU, marking South Africa's official participation in the ILRS program, was signed early this month by the Chinese Ambassador to South Africa Chen Xiaodong on behalf of the CNSA and Humbulani Mudau, head of the South African National Space Agency, the CNSA said in an announcement on its website.

SMART ROBOT

A unique robot made a splash at the just-concluded Smart China Expo 2023 in Chongqing, southwest China. It might be no bigger than a remote-control car, but it has already captured the attention of urban facilities providers.

Floating in the expo's pool, the device, measuring 80 centimeters in length and 20 centimeters in width, seamlessly transmitted images to a sizable screen in real-time.

"This is a floating robot we developed mainly for urban underground sewage pipe network repair," said Liu Jun, smart device project leader of the southwest branch of China Construction Second Engineering Bureau.

EARTH SCIENCES RESEARCH CENTER

China and Pakistan will establish a joint research center in October to promote the study of Earth sciences and sci-tech exchanges, an official in charge of the center's preparatory work said on Thursday during the 2023 China International Fair for Trade in Services.

Hong Tianhua said the China-Pakistan Joint Research Center on Earth Sciences will be established in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, in October as a high-level scientific and technological innovation platform between the two countries to promote sci-tech cooperation and talent cultivation.

The center is being initiated by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, and supported by the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment under the CAS and Quaid-i-Azam University in Pakistan. Enditem
