Pohang Steelers down 10-man Wuhan Three Towns in AFC Champions League

WUHAN, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Three-time titleholder Pohang Steelers defeated 10-man Wuhan Three Towns 3-1 at home in AFC Champions League on Wednesday, while Melbourne City cruised past Hangzhou FC 2-1.

Wuhan took the lead in the ninth minute, as Ghana forward Abdul-Aziz Yakubu volleyed to the far corner in the crowded penalty area. Three minutes later, Kim Jong-woo passed the ball by his right heel to help Shin Kwang-hoon tie the score. In the 40th minute, Xie Pengfei of Wuhan, who toppled Brazilian midfielder Oberdan while sliding the ball, was shown a red card.

In the second half, facing 10-man Wuhan Three Towns, the Pohang Steelers stepped up their attacking to keep Wuhan's goalkeeper busier. Brazilian forward Zeca turned the table with a powerful volley in the 54th minute, and scored a brace in the stoppage time to seal the game.

"We played well in the beginning, but was thrown into an unfavorable situation due to the red card and had to adjust the formation," said Ren Hang, captain of Wuhan. "A number of players in our team were injured or sick, hopefully they can get back to join us promptly and gain good results in the following games," he added.

Elsewhere, Melbourne City beat Zhejiang FC 2-1, Urawa Red Diamonds cruised past Hanoi FC 6-0, and Bangkok United saw a 3-2 victory against Jeonbuk Motors. Enditem
